EMG Biofeedback

The treatment combines electrical stimulation of specific muscles and tissues with real-time monitoring of their activity. The technology allows for the strengthening of targeted muscles. This therapy is used in the treatment of urogynecological and orthopedic issues. Depending on the indications, the physiotherapist places electrodes on the patient’s skin or internally (vaginally, rectally). The emitted signals stimulate the muscles and tissues, supporting their regeneration.

  • Painful menstruation;
  • Prolapse of pelvic organs;
  • Recovery after gynecological surgeries;
  • Weakened pelvic floor muscles after childbirth;
  • Weakened or increased pelvic floor muscle tension during pregnancy;
  • Pain, damage, or weakness in other muscle groups;
  • Constipation, fecal incontinence;
  • Neurological disorders.

The treatment requires a qualifying consultation with a physiotherapist.

The benefits

  • Effective strengthening of pelvic floor muscles;
  • Improved control over bladder and bowel functions;
  • Accelerated tissue healing, improved blood circulation;
  • Increased joint range of motion;
  • Enhanced comfort and confidence in daily life.

How to prepare

On the day of the procedure:

  • wear comfortable clothing,
  • remove jewellery and watches,
  • ensure that your skin is clean and dry – do not use creams, lotions or ointments.

Treatment process

STAGE I: Preparation for the procedure
Cleaning and drying the skin in the areas where the electrodes will be placed in order to ensure proper signal conductivity.

STAGE II: Attaching the measuring electrodes
Placing the active and reference electrodes at selected muscle points in accordance with the anatomy of the area undergoing therapy.

STAGE III: EMG biofeedback training
The training consists of the patient performing exercises that support the learning of controlled tension and relaxation of specific muscles. Muscle activity is recorded and displayed in real time on a monitor, allowing for ongoing assessment of progress. In some cases, the therapy may be supplemented with supportive electrostimulation.

STAGE IV: End of session
Discussion of the results obtained and recommendations for further exercises or continuation of therapy.

Recovery guidelines

After the procedure, avoid strenuous physical activity.

Contraindications

EMG Biofeedback requires active participation from the patient. The only contraindication is an inability to communicate, understand instructions or cooperate, e.g. in the case of people with profound consciousness disorders.
